Guide to Weekly Mount and Pet Farming (Dungeon and Raid Edition)

There are a myriad of different mounts and pets to be found in Azeroth, the most prestigeous of which are hidden within raids and dungeons. Grab a friend or two and use this guide to head out and farm the rarest of companions and mounts. Mileage may very depending on your class, gear, and skill levels but my husband and I have been able to easily two man any of the fights on this list with our Rogue/Hunter combo.

Eastern Kingdoms

Karazhan
1 Mount, 4 Pets

The only bosses that you must kill to gain access to Prince are Moroes (required to unlock Opera), Opera, Curator, and Chess event. You may run in to trouble soloing Chess event so I am including a strategy that works well from user Derpomatic on Wowhead.
1. Speak to your King/Chief to start the event and buff your troops Press 4 before stopping control of the gamepiece. Note: there is a debuff every time you leave a piece that forces you to wait a few seconds before jumping onto the next one. Watch for this and wait until its up or you will be clicking in vain!
2. Move the Pawns in front of the Knights one space forward Press 1. Move the Rooks (elementals/demons at the outer edges of the board) diagonally where the pawns used to be. This brings their AoE within range of the main battle area in the middle.
3. Move the Pawns in front of the King and Queen pieces so that when Medivh cheats, you can move your King out of the fire. Note: always move him unless the enemy King is almost dead.
4. Jump on the Queen piece and melt the enemy King's face Press 3 until the match is over. If he's not within range right away, don't worry he'll come to you soon enough. Typically, you will move your own King out of the fire once and the rest of the time you'll be spamming the single target spell until he's down.

Zul'Gurub
2 Mounts

The pets only drop from Heroic, please note that this is higher level content and can be trickier to solo than the rest.

Stratholme
1 Mount

To complete a Baron run you now use the Service Gate (west of the Main Gate) to enter the Undead side of Stratholme. You will have to kill the three bosses that are protecting the spires they are standing in front of. Go inside each spire and destroy the crystal inside. This will unlock the gate to Slaughter Square where Baron is. You will have a fight a boss and clear a small gauntlet like event. The door to Baron will then unlock, good luck, this is one of the lowest drop rate mounts in the game.

Kalimdor

Onyxia's Lair
1 Mount

There isn't much to watch for here, don't stand in Deep Breath (50 DKP minus) and go ahead and burn down whelps if she even gets a chance to spawn them.

The Culling of Stratholme
1 Mount

Culling of Stratholme is accessed through the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. These drop from an optional boss that is in a alley to the left, just before the final boss. There is a timer on this boss, but you will have no trouble beating it, just don't go AFK or something. Happy guaranteed drop!

Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
4 Mounts (Technically), 3 Pets

The Resonating Crystal mounts can only be used in AQ, but do count towards your mount total. These are a zone drop and will usually all drop for you within one clear. There is an achievement to obtain the red crystal.
Viscidus requires you to have some form of Frost damage (Frost Bolt, Icy Touch, Frost Shock, etc...) when he goes immune to damage you have to spam Frost damage on him until he transitions over.
Emperor Vek'lor, or Twin Emps as you're most likely to hear him referenced as, is a little tricky if you don't know what the mechanics are. First of all, be sure to kill all of the big Anubis statues wandering around, they pull when you pull the bosses and can get you killed. Vek'lor is immune to physical damage and Vek'nilash is immune to spell damage; they share health so stick to the one you can damage. They will eventually teleport to opposite sides of the room, just be sure to swap with them. When they are next to each other they will heal, but this isn't something to be concerned with current DPS.

Outlands

Portal to Shattrath and make your way to...

Sethekk Halls
1 Mount

Sethekk Halls will be found in Auchindoun, east of Shattrath City. Anzu only spawns in Heroic mode, he no longer requires an item that only Druids could obtain. There is no special strategy at this point, just burn him down and move along.

Serpentshrine Caverns (SSC)
3 Pets

In the Coilfang Reservoir you will find SSC, The Underbog, The Steamvault, and The Slave Pens. SSC is a level 70 (Tier 5) raid instance and is where you are going to find the 3 listed pets. The only things to watch out for are a boss on the way to Tidewalker named Fathom-Lord, just be sure to clear all the mobs in his room before pulling him, and a mechanic on the Vashj fight itself. Vashj can now be skipped straight to without killing any other bosses. She will transition into a phase two that makes her go immune, you have to collect Tainted Cores from the Tainted Elementals (the green ones that throw sludge) and use them to break her shield. They spawn slowly, but despawn quickly so make sure you get to them fast, luckily looting the Cores no longer roots you. They can spawn anywhere around the bottom of the platform so just watch for when you start seeing sludge being thrown at you and follow it. The striders fear you and the other elementals buff her, so try to burn down the other adds on your way.
If you haven't finished your Sporeggar and Cenarion Expedition rep, I recommend you go ahead and take the time to clear the three instances as well. Keep all Bog Lord Tendrils and Sanguine Habiscus to finish your reps to earn your Tiny Spore Bat pet and your Cenarion War Hippogryph mount.

Tempest Keep - The Eye
1 Mount, 3 Pets

Tempest Keep (TK) is another level 70, Tier 5, raid. When fighting Solarian be sure to clear all trash first, they will MC you and get you killed. Void Reaver is immune to disease and poison and will frequently silence you. You may want to save him for last and take the staff from the Kael'thas fight to prevent the silence, depending on your class and spec. Kael'thas is a buggy sonofa so be sure to put away pets before fighting him, bring a PvP trinket if you have one, and settle in for a very long, drawn-out fight.

Hearth, port back to Shattrath, and take the portal to the Isle of Quel'Danas.

Magisters' Terrace
1 Mount, 1 Pet

Magisters' Terrace is pretty straight forward at these levels, try to give yourself some space to work on the 3 boss fight (the "PvP" bosses). This instance is also well farmed for the Orb of the Sin'dorei which can drop from any of the bosses.

Updates

I have been absent from this blog for nearly a year now, and I have a pretty good excuse, but I missed it and I plan to pick it back up. The novel following this is to explain myself and my bad behavior. :(

Mists of Pandaria was something I was excited for when it was announced, as most Warcraft fans were. A new expansion, and this time we're going to a new land again. The Theramore pre-launch event should have clued me in to how I would feel about the expansion, but I soldiered through and bought my husband and I both copies the morning of launch.

We landed in Pandaria and began our adventure, excited about the hidden treasures to seek and interact with. I even found the Bind on Account Jade Infused Sword 30 minutes in to play. We encountered our first Rare, Morgrinn Crackfang, and were excited to find that Rare mobs were truly the Elites of old.

Then we realized that there weren't really any instances to level with, and they certainly weren't our favorites we had ever done at that. Then we realized how many dailies there were and that they seemed, oddly, to be about the only thing available. Not many more instances unlocked at 90, professions were tied to dailies, and our guild of 6 years had moved to 10 man raids because there just weren't enough incentives to deal with the extra stress of planning around 25 people. Looking for Raid was my own personal nightmare; it was tuned way too easy to even keep you awake, better yet entertained, and populated with the same pond scum that trolled the very worst Looking for Groups.

Needless to say, it wasn't long before my husband and I both found ourselves seeing our WoW subscriptions showing up on our bank account and realizing that we hadn't even logged in that month. We ended up cancelling our accounts and biding our time with League of Legends and joining some old guild mates on Guild Wars 2.

When the Siege of Orgrimmar patch launched, I had a guild mate tell me about Flex Raiding. We could now run raids, even current content, with anywhere between 10 and 25 raid members. It would automatically scale so people could even come and go as they pleased. I was intrigued but was going to wait it out until I saw Blizzard running a Facebook campaign for a free week of game time.

A week passed before I knew it and I was sucked back in. Guild mates were dragging me around Timeless Isle and I was able to get into Flex on any of my characters I had leveled and just enjoy the company of friends I had for years. MoP was more than tolerable. I was having fun again.

That lasted for 3 weeks. We started hemorrhaging players each week until even Flex, with all of its...well, flexibility, couldn't be run anymore. We found they were leaving for oQueue groups that required 550 iLvl. This despite the fact that we were clearing each boss on 3 or less attempts each week. They quickly turned Flex from what it was supposed to be, an opportunity to play with who you wanted to, in to another way to try to quickly devour content, get hot lootz, and move on.

Flex was a large step in the right direction, and after watching Blizzcon I have hope that the expected changes to raid types will be the final and correct one. Meanwhile, it sounds like we have another WotLK on our hands, with a massive gap between the final patch and the next expansion. In the meanwhile I believe we will be utilizing OpenRaid and I will be picking up Project Troll Roll once again. Here's hoping Warlords of Draenor will be a breath of fresh air.

Project Troll Roll: Level 60 Complete

Vanilla Completed!

Well, this section has been an experience due to patch 5.0.2 dropping right in the middle of everything. I had Zen'Sera to level 54 when the patch went live, and it threw a serious wrench in the works.

Project Troll Roll: Level 40 Complete

The beginning of Arathi Highlands, a large chunk of the Hinterlands and most of Western Plaguelands make up levels 30-40.

The Hir'watha quests and the Lumbermill quests in Western Plaguelands were the only major drags, everything else was quick and pretty stream lined. I'm glad all 9 of my girls are Herbalists, it would make you sick to see how many herbs you had to pass up in Western Plaguelands.

  • Zen'fera - Still Fury and still doing very well.
  • Zen'za - Speeding up with talents, still not as fast as Survival.
  • Zen'tuku - Easy to level in general, being sneaky has its perks.
  • Zen'sera - Had to stay Disc all the way up to 40, I'm hoping Shadow may finally be worth it in the 40-50 bracket.
  • Zen'jie - I'm starting to believe my Shamans will always be my favorite characters to level.
  • Zen'kazkah - Send Pet. Dot Dot Dot. Tab. Dot Dot Dot. Repeat.
  • Zen'kikii - Finally getting more points into Tiger's Fury (regain energy/more damage) has made the Druid one of the fastest classes this bracket.

Project Troll Roll: Level 30 Complete

I went ahead and moved on over to Hillsbrad Foothills and a little of Arathi Highlands. I have to admit that this leveling chunk started to wear me thin a lot quicker. The whole zone is fun until you get to the Stromgarde section; poor design with the whole run all the way over here, kill a couple things, run all the way back, get sent back to the same place and being forced to mow through the same mobs.

Zen'fera - 123 DPS. Joy.
Zen'za - 96 DPS. Full BoA group makes Focus hard to obtain. Better.
Zen'tuku - 112 DPS. Hemo makes the world go round.
Zen'sera - Couldn't do Shadow anymore, switched to Disc. Managed 78 DPS in dungeons. Not good, but better than it would have been.
Zen'jie - Still love my Sham. Got Stormstrike at 29, was sitting at 172 DPS in dungeons.
Zen'fi - 134 DPS. Oh Hot Streak. I love you.
Zen'kazkah - 94 DPS. Good God, Demo is amazing for leveling, but it's hard to shine when you're in with a decent group.
Zen'kikii - 132 DPS. So this would be higher if I were not so lazy and had gone to train...any of my skills.

Project Troll Roll: Level 20 Complete

Surprisingly is wasn't until I hit Zen'kikii (Last one on the list) that the Barrens really started to drag on my soul. After I got each of them to about 19 I went ahead a queued up for Shadowfang Keep to get to 20 and do a little experiment to see who can do what. We see people in BoA's so often now, it's easy to lose touch with what an average, new player can milk out of their character. I'm not new, I'm also not the greatest, but simply and comfortably average.

Make sure to check out the "Barrens 10-20" photo album at the top for a peek at what it's like to level in the Barrens.

  • Zen'fera - (Fury) 60 DPS. I've always loved Fury. Soloing was quick and easy and the instance ran smooth.
  • Zen'za - (Marks) 70 DPS. I've been a Survival Hunter since I started raiding in BC, but I was Marks before that and figured I'd give it another shot. If you get the jump then its probably going to be a one shot on things your level if you don't it's an irritating muddle of spin jumping and pin pricks of Arcane Shots.
  • Zen'tuku - (Sub) 38 DPS. Shaaaaaaaame. To be fair, ambush only gets you so far when you're chain pulling an instance. Fun to solo, however, the changes to stealth speed and cooldown has made things a lot more fun.
  • Zen'sera - (Shadow) 41 DPS. I forgot how much I hate low level Priests. Mana sucks and there aren't enough skills to be using as Shadow. This was the only character, out of all freakin' nine, that ever ran out of mana, and she did it frequently.
  • Zen'jie - (Enhance) 57 DPS. My geared sucked at the beginning of the instance (just bad luck) but by the end I had managed weapon upgrades and it pulled it up. Shaman was refreshing to come back to after the Priest.
  • Zen'fi - (Fire) 48 DPS. A little skewed by the full BoAs group I had making it impossible for me to get a cast off half of the time. She was a blast, excuse the pun, to level and will only getting better once I talent into proc'ing Pyroblast instead of Arcane Missiles.
  • Zen'kazkah - (Demo) 46 DPS. Not all that amazing in instance, unstoppable soloing. Send pet. Dot next. Send pet. Dot next. Done.
  • Zen'Kikii - 46 DPS. Once again, just fine in instances but you can't beat their solo abilities.

Project Troll Roll: Level 10 Complete

Reached level 10 so far, I note that each class is pretty even in damage and survivability. Though Cat Form and the Mage pulled out ahead from 8-10.

Project Troll Roll

I love Trolls, but for some reason or another I never manage to finish leveling one. That's about to change, in 9 different ways. I'm setting out to roll each class that a Troll can be; Project Troll Roll has commenced! I'm going in class order and leveling each one in 10 level blocks then moving to the next in the interest of keeping rest.
I'm on a brand new server with no access to friends (so no high levels running me through or loaning gold) and no heirlooms.

For the sake of curiosity I'm going to be keeping record of /played times and average DPS while solo questing.

Meet the girls!

Zen'fera - Protection/Fury Warrior
Zen'za - Marksmanship Hunter
Zen'tuku - Subtlety Rogue
Zen'sera - Shadow Priest
Zen'died - Frost Death Knight
Zen'jie - Enhancement Shaman
Zen'fi - Fire Mage
Zen'kazkah - Demonology Warlock
Zen'kikii - Feral Druid

Note: I am not including minor glyphs; due to their nature they all sell but don't sell at fantastic prices.

Low Level LFD Tool and You

For those of you unfamiliar with the LFD (Looking for Dungeon), also called LFG (LFGroup), tool it is a fairly new feature in WoW that allows you to find people looking to join a dungeon group. You can start using it at level 15, and can either sign up for specific dungeons that are within your level range, or sign up for "random" which will do exactly as it says. When your group is ready you are automatically teleported into it, and can teleport out by leaving group or click the "eye" on your minimap. If you are DPS, expect a wait of about ~10 minutes, this depends on your server, time, and level range of course. Healers will expect a minute or two, and tanks are nearly "insta-queue", so try not to go AFK. Nothing more annoying than sitting there watching someone time out because they decided to go get a sandwich.

Word to the wise; signing up for random is both faster and usually more beneficial for you as you will get a Satchel of Helpful Goods, which contains a random enchantment blue, some gold and extra experience at the end of the dungeon. At 70 you will start to get badges from doing randoms.

As far as my experiences go, here is what you can generally expect out of the groups at certain levels. I'll update as my two lowbie alts get a little further along, as most of my alts were in Outlands or Northrend by the time LFD came out.
...

Low level LFD grind

The Looking for Dungeon (LFD) tool. Bane and hero to us all.
My husband and I have started some characters on Deathwing (PvP-US) recently, and as a gold boost made some alts with professions that we're leveling through the LFD tool. He, Tai'za the Prot Warrior, and I, Jinmara the Disc Priest, haven't touched any quests or mobs since level 15, with the exception of two or three dungeon quests.
It's been fast, the gear/disenchantables/cloth fall like manna from the heavens, but it has been trying on the patience. First off are the people that realize there is a 15 minute timer before they can be kicked, and use it for general asshattery; pulling everything, ninjaing, afking at the entrance for free experience. I will not kick someone for low DPS, as long as they aren't doing anything else stupid, but some of the people that we have run into really have me wondering.

I'm a Disc priest, who has to be mana conservative with very little mana regen gear and oh..yeah, hey I'm healing. Yet I have managed to be in 7(!) different groups that I out damaged other group members. Included in those that I have beaten have been a Frost Mage that did nothing but cast Blizzard, a melee only Marks Hunter (I mean only, no pet either), and a Balance Druid that Moonfire spammed and then whacked at the mob with a staff.
I often ask the person if they're new to the game, or if they're just trying out a new playstyle and every single time the response has been "I don't have any tools as this spec!" or "I have no gear!" or even "I'm a level lower than you!". The most frustrating part is that 9 times out of 10, if you try to help someone they will only argue, call you an elitist, and then continue with what they were doing. We're not even mentioning the number of them that are in heirloom gear.

Whelp Grinding!

I've started a new project; partly because I want a new mage for a bit of battleground fun once the patch hits, and partly because I want all of the whelpling mini pets.

Meet Cryocore. She's a frost mage and I will be leveling her by grinding on Whelplings. Here's the plan; pick up skinning, good bags, and a sturdy wand.

From level 20-29 she will be grinding on the Red, Crimson, and Flamesnorting whelplings in the Wetlands. Obtain Tiny Crimson Whelpling.
Levels 33-38 she will moving on to the Dreaming and Adolecent whelps of the Swamp of Sorrows for Tiny Emerald Whelpling.
38-45 are the Scalding and Searing whelps of the Badlands for a Dark Whelpling.
Finally there is the Azure Dragonspawn, Scalebane, Magelord, and Mageweavers of Azshara from level 55-58. The final lootable whelpling, the Azure Whelpling.

Awww, Frosty is going to have a family again.

Feral Gear Up List

Seems like this is slowly turning into a Druid blog, eh? Probably because a.) my freshly 80 Druid is my current baby and b.) seems like a lot of Druid blogs are dieing as of late. Anyways, on to the lootz! The higher in the list the better (in a blanket sense, your Druid may be a mile under the hit cap so the next one down may be a bit better for you. Use your judgement!)
...

The Druids are Out

in full force. I just finally got my characters copied over to the PTR, and it seems like about 50% of the other players are druids playing around with the new forms.

I couldn't resist either, of course.

First image of reference for you. Yes, that is a Tauren Bear Form next to an Amani War Bear mount. Yes, they really are nearly the same size. Yes, that is one big bear butt.
...

Druid Forms

I wanted to wait until all the information and screens were out before I freaked on the new druid forms. I may only have a 77 Night Elf Druid and a 30-something Tauren Druid, but I'm right there with the rest of the Druid community in our excitement. I've heard a lot of complaints about "poodles" and such, but I think the updates are amazing. The new art style meshes with WoTLK better and the faces on the cats are menacing, and bears can close their mouths. Who thought this day would come? My only complaint, I know I'm ungrateful, is that they're having us change our forms through changing our non-form hair/fur colors. I like my white haired Night Elf and my black furred Tauren, I don't like the white bear or cat, and I don't like the black cat. I wish that there was a feature that would let you decide your bear, cat, and humanoid colors separately. Oh well, I'll stop whining eventually.

I used Andrige's custom art patch for quite some time, and they were beautiful.

This pack was created due to Blizzard never listening to the constant and needed suggestion of a change to our Feral forms. Lets hope that this might give Blizzard a clue on what we truly want!

If you look at his forms, and then at Blizzards, there are some distinct similarities. I'm not saying that Blizzard actually looked at his, as I have no way of knowing, but at the very least, it's an amusing coincidence.

This image is copyrighted to Andrige, and you can find more information on his pack here.

Blizzard just released information on what bear and cat form combo you'll get with the different hair/fur colors. MMO Champion has released very nice compilation images that you will find below.

Starting on a New Server

Whether you're just rolling a new alt, or considering a serious re-roll, the prospect of starting over can be especially daunting.  I'm one of those freaks that finds it refreshing, so I have managed to collect a few tricks to getting on your feet. There are some basic things that you need on a character; bags, a mount, and gold to support any professions you may want.
...

Dual Boxing

Through my multiple alts, I often wondered if there was a faster way to level. Then one day, inside a truly sorry Arathi Basin match, it finally hit me. It hit me in the form of five perfectly timed Lightning Bolts.
Dual-boxing has been around for quite some time now within the WoW community. Some people are against it, saying that it gives unfair advantages within PvP. While this may or may not be true, Blizzard has clearly stated that they have nothing in the ToS against dual-boxing, and that they are not concerned with its effects in PvP.
With that out of the way, we have to wonder what the pros and cons can be to running a multi-box setup. The obvious pros to multi-boxing are; leveling multiple characters at the same time, the ability to complete difficult quests (and even instances) by yourself, and coupled with refer-a-friend two and a half times experience bonuses up until level sixty. The cons depend on what set up you chose, but a few are present no matter what; it can be difficult to acclimate yourself to controlling multiple characters, paying for multiple accounts each month, and the price of purchasing the game and any expansions for each new account.

Zhevra Mounted - The Beginning

Welcome to Zhevra Mounted, a blog all about the surly adventures of an alt-a-holic. Expect ramblings about questing, vanity pets, professions...ramblings in general. I hope to have everything up and running soon.
